Kathryn Dodd

From abstraction, figuration, calligraphy and glyphic marking — my paintings combine layered oil glazes and scratched lettering with iconic symbols, figures and forms — from large scale works in oils which often incorporate plaster, gesso and gold into the surface — to small drawings in oil on paper.

Much of my work considers issues of identity, memory and legacy. Exploring the metaphoric ‘ghosts’ which inhabit and shape us: culture, language, experience, genetics, people and beliefs.

I made my home in rural West Wales in 1995 coming originally from the London Suburbs although my family roots lie in the North East of Scotland; and this cultural composite resonates in the background content of my work.
